After seeing their hard work pay off by way of a PSAC playoff appearance last year, the Edinboro softball team is entering this upcoming season with respect in the conference.

The Fighting Scots were picked fourth out of nine teams in the western division in the 2015 Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Boro made its first trip to the PSAC tournament since 2010 last season after finishing fourth in the west with a 17-24-1 record overall and 12-15-1 mark in the PSAC.

The Scots, who are under the tutelage of 27th-year head coach Dan Gierlak, are returning seven starters from last season’s squad, headlined by first baseman Haley Struebing and third baseman Brooke Callaghan.

The duo powered the Edinboro offense last season. Struebing had eight home runs and 25 RBIs and Callaghan chipped in nine doubles, five home runs and two triples.

Additionally, all five pitchers from last season will be returning for the 2015 campaign.

Edinboro will have to replace All-PSAC honoree Brenna Cosgrove. Cosgrove set a new school record for stolen bases in a single season as she swiped 24 bags. Additionally, her .407 batting average last season was tied for eighth in a season in Edinboro history and ninth in the PSAC last season.

The defending champion, California (Pa.), was picked first in the west and received eight of the nine first place votes. Indiana (Pa.), who was ranked second, received the other vote. Gannon was third. Bloomsburg was ranked first in the eastern division.

A full season preview will appear in next week’s edition of the Spectator
